Aquapol - Installation Procedures and Protocol for Monitoring

The installation of an AQUAPOL device for a property involves a precise set of actions, which include various technical surveys, exact moisture level measurements, salt levels measurements, electro-chemical potential measurements of the masonry and so on.

The installation procedure requires a high level of technical expertise, hence the installation time for an average sized property takes anywhere between 4 - 8 hours.

This involves the following steps:

1. Measurement of the humidity of the walls with the Darr gravometric method

Drilled samples are taken from various points of the building, from various heights of the wall (typically at 20 centimetre intervals along a vertical line up to the height of the evaporation zone, from a maximum depth of 15cm).

The samples are taken from different parts of the building, in agreement with the customer or his technical advisor (e.g. an architect in the case of large buildings such as a castle). The number of measurement points depends on the moisture content, the state of the masonry, and the construction materials used.

The moisture values of the samples taken from the wall are determined as follows: the samples are first weighed by the built-in precision scale of the field laboratory equipment then dried at 105°C in its special computerized oven. The actual moisture value of the sample will be determined from the weight change between the wet and dry material.

The values then are registered in a technical protocol, in the presence of the customer.

The above measurement steps are repeated for each subsequent drilled sample.

2. Salts level measurements

During the drying-out process the amount of residual salts in the plaster and/or on its surface must be monitored since at this stage, due to the evaporation of moisture, they crystallize. Being hygroscopic, salts attract and hold moisture from the environment, maintaining the masonry damp.

3. Dew point measurement

Dew point measurement is performed to locate the so-called thermal bridges that create condensation moisture within the building.

4. Measurement of the horizontal and vertical electrical potentials?

Building materials have different chemical properties, one of them is their pH value. The pH of a substance indicates whether a material is acidic or alkaline. pH values from 0-7 indicate acidic nature, while values from 7-14 indicate alkaline properties. Seven is the neutral point.

The diverse pH values of the building materials will result in the formation of small electro-chemical voltages between the plaster and the wall, and this “battery effect” on capillary level will attract and maintain moisture.

Measuring these electrical potentials will allow us to determine the physical and chemical compatibility between the masonry and the existing plaster: the greater the pH difference between the various layers, the higher the measured electric potential.

This analysis is part of the masonry diagnostic process and allows us to recommend you the best materials and techniques to be used, to restore the plaster in the most cost-effective and convenient way, by taking into account the bio-compatibility of various building materials.

5. Installation of the AQUAPOL device and testing its radius of action

There is no lamp or visual indicator on the AQUAPOL device to show that it is working. However there is a test performed with an electronic instrument right after the installation that will show that the device is working correctly and at full capacity. This test is called the "Reaction measurement".

Subsequent Monitoring

Subsequent monitoring of the installation until the complete dehumidification is attained is performed by regular 3 to 6 months checks.

Every 6 months the masonry's humidity levels will be re-checked by taking drilled samples, and the new values will be recorded into the technical protocol.

The proper functioning of the AQUAPOL device will also be checked by our service technician. Included in the after-sale service are two moisture assessments - 12 and 24 months after installation. These assessments can be called for earlier if required. This keeps us informed and we document the changes for our (and your) records as an ongoing study of the effectiveness of the AQUAPOL System.

The technical support service also includes targeted advice for the resolution of any other possible causes of moisture (e.g. other than capillary rising damp), with an indication of the supplementary accompanying measures.
